The Orange County Medical Association (OCMA) is a non-profit voluntary physician member organization designed to promote the art and science of medicine, the protection of public health, and the betterment of the medical profession. OCMA is a county component of the California Medical Association (CMA).
OCMA advocates for physicians and their patients on various healthcare issues. Whether it is new legislation or health policy debates in Washington D.C., Sacramento or Santa Ana, OCMA/CMA plays an active role. Primary advocacy focal points include ensuring patient access to quality healthcare and protecting the most vital relationship in healthcare: that between doctor and patient.
Amidst the passage of historically significant national health policy legislation, OCMA/CMA prepares toolkits for doctors and patients to thrive in the new healthcare environment. Critical to the success of reform efforts, is the link to meaningful use of health information technology. The goal is to devote greater attention to wellness and prevention; to better track adherence to treatment plans; and to improve access to primary care. OCMA is making momentous strides to lead these efforts locally and in unison with community partners.
OCMA’s highly interactive website features a sophisticated physician web portal customized for each individual member. The physician web portal is a prime destination for patients searching for physicians in Orange County. It also facilitates physician to physician referrals. This is of tremendous value to OCMA physicians and to patients in the Orange County community. OCMA’s website also promotes links to charitable volunteer activities and community involvement which are important aspects of the OCMA experience.
OCMA is linked in with social media venues. OCMA Twitter feeds include timely political and economic legislative advocacy updates. OCMA’s Facebook page is a source for updates and photos about current news and events, providing opportunities for networking and mentoring within the OC physician community. OCMA’s YouTube page is a source of video interviews of physician members on various pressing medical topics.
OCMA derives strength from the pluralism and diverse cultural heritage of Orange County’s physician and patient communities. By assisting doctors in successfully managing their medical practices, more time can be devoted to meeting the specific needs of their patients. Personalized attention is critical in promoting health and well-being. Taking good care of patients also means that doctors need to take good care of themselves. OCMA’s Physician Wellness Program provides resources for stress management techniques, to reduce risks of burnout and to encourage positive personal and professional development.
In essence, OCMA’s core activities provide for a highly interactive medical community environment that is physician-driven and patient focused.
